Friday the 13th: Redux or Jaba the Rock

Jesse likes this picture because he sees a rock that’s the spitting image of Jaba the Hut, I like it because it looks like a Jason Voorhees POV. That’s just spooky, man!

This one is a from a friend of a friend who lives in town. People tend to think for a bike video to be entertaining, it has to feature amazing riding or it at least needs to showcase your best moments. This shows that just isn’t so. First time I saw it, I almost peed myself I laughed so hard!

Step-up Build: Day Two

February 18, 2014 at 5:34 am

Last Sunday was an extremely productive day working on Grasshopper. I guess that’s the way it goes when you have the help of 17 volunteers that all showed up ready to work, and work hard! Our time Sunday was spent working on a new feature on the trail, a ten foot high step-up jump that will include a shallow, 8 foot long set-up jump will be used to gauge speed into the step-up jump; the idea being that if you clear the set-up jump, you’re good to go on the step-up. During the day we grubbed out 5 stumps including 3 huge ones in the run-in to the jump and 2 smaller ones at the top of the hill in the landing zone, as well as countless rocks. We built a 3 foot high landing for the jump at the top of the hill and excavated a massive amount dirt from the hillside in preparation for shaping the run-in and the take-off. Initial clearing of vegetation was also done for the exit to the step-up which will bear left and turn the rider back down the hillside to rejoin the existing trail. More work will be needed to finish the take-off, but we’ve made a ton of progress on what is a highly ambitious feature to build.

Thanks to Dan Benowitz for organizing the WWU volunteers this past Sunday (and the one before on February 9th). Thanks to the members of the cycling team that came out to help this weekend and last. Thanks to Alex Lewis, Terry Lewis, Dash Willis, Nick Marshall, Pam Fonda, John Johnston and Fred Phillips. In short, thanks to everyone involved for coming out and helping to make my dreams in dirt come true!

Building the Beast, New Step-up Feature on Grasshopper

February 9, 2014 at 4:53 pm

Quesion: What can you accomplish building trail with a crew of road cyclists? Answer: Plenty. Within three hours, we cleaned off the hillside; moving ferns, topsoil and A DOWNED TREE! As well as, roughing in the basic shape of the soon to be Alexis Step-up. This crew is obviously not afraid of a day’s work. Huge thanks to the WWU Cycling Team, as well as, Alex Lewis, Dash Willis and Dan Benowitz for all their efforts. Thanks crew!
